Bonn Symposium 2011

Mobility – Development – Culture

Towards Sustainable Transport Strategies

Under the Patronage of

Dr Frank Appel

Chief Executive Officer
Deutsche Post DHL, Bonn

„Sustainable business requires a decoupling of economic growth on the one hand and greenhouse gas effects on the other hand. This task is one of the most important challenges of our time if we want to leave future generations an environment worth living in. Deutsche Post DHL is willing to make an active contribution.”

A strategy for the development and implementation of sustainable mobility concepts, which only includes technical innovations and political measures, is not sufficient. Sustainability calls for a change of mindset in the entire society, which can only be achieved thanks to a different form of education. The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development - coordinated in Germany by the German UNESCO commission - offers an excellent basis to work towards this objective.

In an increasingly globalised world, the mobility of people, goods and ideas have proven to be an important factor of development and combating poverty. The establishment of affordable, reliable and widely accessible transport systems as a key element of mobility and development in this context has however received little attention in the mainstream of development policy debates.

The challenges and the potential that are linked to the establishment of modern transport systems, that reduce negative impacts on the climate and the cultural landscape, are not only of concern for developing countries but a question that concerns us all. I am very pleased that this year’s Bonn Symposium has taken up this very important issue.
